Axe throwing is a safe, easy, and fun entertainment option. The first time you bury your axe in the bullseye also happens to be completely unforgettable. Safe. An experienced instructor oversees your experience, showing you how to throw safely and effectively. Our lanes are built with extra safety measures to avoid bounce backs. We’ve never heard of a serious injury as a result of competitive axe throwing. After a few throws, the only thing you’ll be hurting is your opponents’ feelings. Easy. You don’t need to be able to chop down a forest; just about anyone with reasonable strength can participate in axe throwing. With instruction, you should be able to experience the thrill of hitting the target within just a few throws. Axe throwing is about finesse and the rotation of the axe. Like darts, it takes no great skill to do, but a lifetime to master. And that’s why we have leagues! Oh, and, if you CAN chop down a forest, please make sure you have the proper permits. Fun. We always do our best to give you a night to remember. Axe throwing is supposed to be a unique, memorable experience, and we’re always trying out new games to challenge your skills, and offering different ways to help you get competitive. You never know who among your group might emerge as a future lumberjack! OUR STORY American Axes is a family owned business. We are a very competitive family where there is always a winner, a loser and a lot of fun along the way. That competitive spirit is alive and well with the experience that we want to provide you with when you come to American Axes. Until 2019, none of us had ever thrown an axe – at least not at a target. We decided to give it a try and had so much fun that we started our own axe throwing company to share our excitement about the sport with others. Our family has a very diverse background with experience with sports & entertainment, safety, nursing, teaching, law, insurance, engineering and interior design – American Axes has been a labor of love to bring out the best skills from all of us. When choosing the name, American Axes, we sifted through nearly 100 options and landed on American Axes because we wanted to celebrate what we love about living here and our passion for sports and the outdoors. It’s not going to be rah rah red white and blue in your face, but rather you will see a National Parks theme and outdoors color pattern. Whatever games are on will be up on the TV’s and good music playing on the speakers. We will even have some retro video games to play on the side. We would love to host you at American Axes and share our vision on axe throwing with you. Reserve Your Lane Each lane holds up to 6 people and can be reserved by the hour. It is well known that there has been a reduction in the number of venues. As an owner of four, I can attest that we have seen a declining number of customers or corporate events the past 18-months – call it a 10% decline, this year appears to be continuing that trend. I recently attended a leadership conference and this phrase stuck with me: “entertainment’s biggest competition right now is Netflix. ” That made so much sense to me – in a struggling economy, a great way to save money is to entertain yourself with subscriptions that do not require you to leave your home. I have always believed that urban axe throwing as an activity will find its place in the entertainment field, but the build it and they will come model is no longer effective. When I think about what a consumer looks for in anything they seek or enjoy, it boils down to consistency, quality and how they feel as a result of the activity. As a sport, I believe that we have issues with these key tenants. Consistency This one is probably the hardest issue to solve. Just thinking about other venues near my store, we have a few different variations of old/new WATL targets, IATF, digital targets, a rogue target that is unique to that particular location and my personal favorite is the venue that takes a can of black spray paint and free-hand draws black rings and then sprays the center red. I know there are others out there in some manner as well that are not represented near my community such as MLAT or BATL. Ultimately, I think all of this clutter in the target design is doing our businesses a disservice. People most think of axe throwing as the activity and not a brand. They think, “hey, I want to go axe throwing” and decide based on what is closest to them, has the best reviews or most cost effective and then makes a purchase decision based on what is important to them. The target itself is not considered most of the time, but the disservice is that customers returning to axe throwing for a second time come in expecting one rule set and get another based on their previous experiences. This happens all the time. Our game should be simple. Think of darts or bowling – in both cases, you pick up a dart or a bowling ball, you know what the objective is without requiring a coach to provide an explanation of the rules of the game and how to score. In Atlanta, I can think of 6 different targets being used right now and honestly, there are probably more when considering mobile units or even the plastic arcade axe throwing variations. We were at one point a rogue venue that drew a target to our own specifications but eventually chose to affiliate with WATL in January 2023 during our 3rd year of business because we felt that it was the most well developed rule set with an organization that was trying to grow the sport through national TV broadcasts and social media efforts – goals that we remain aligned with. I was disappointed to learn that their largest event will no longer be broadcast on ESPN this year, but as a former sports and entertainment marketer, I understand why that happened. I just hope that there will be other ways to amplify our sport that will drive interest from people who have not been introduced to axe throwing yet. Whether it’s WATL, IATF, MLAT or something else – I know that I would make my venue targets to specification of whatever the majority uses in effort to find consistency in the activity. I took my 6yr old daughter bowling recently and she immediately understood how that worked and I hope that axe throwing can one day become as easily understood as that is and it starts with us (as operators) and how we paint our targets and coach our experiences. At this time, that is WATL for American Axes and we believe in their long-term sustainability. Experience This one is difficult to talk about. Why? There are many opinions of what the axe throwing experience should be and you can see it with how every venue is built differently and many are right. I’ve learned a lot over the years following along and listening to others. Our way has been successful, but there are other methods that bring success and hopefully new ways waiting to be discovered that can unlock future success. What I see as a common threat to the venues that are struggling or closing is that they did not offer much by way of amenities. There are a lot of good business owners that have closed or are in the process of winding down, but as an owner of multiple varieties of stores with locations in warehouses off the beaten path and also very urban shopping centers, the successful model is to be able to offer food and drink. If you aren’t comfortable to put in a bar or a kitchen, then allow access to food and drink by where you position your venue. We do not sell food, but we do provide easy access to food with our new locations where in our most recent one, food is delivered to your table by a server from a partnering restaurant. It’s so easy that it can sometimes be surprising to our customers to realize that axe throwing is operated by a different owner than the restaurant. Amenities are important, but just as important is the quality of coaching that a customer receives. I have heard many stories of venues that give customers an axe and then walk away only to come back at the end of their time looking for gratuity. It has happened to me a few times when I have tried other venues in my travels across the country. When we started, I didn’t know how to coach – it took my customers some time to get sticking on the board. Now that I know what to look for, I can get 90% of people to stick to the board in less than 5-throws and it’s very uncommon that it goes beyond 10 throws. That comes with experience and even if you’re new to the business – it’s easy for me and I’m sure many others to teach what to look for with coaching. Just ask or go to other venues to learn. We also try to make special moments for our customers by celebrating their first bullseyes or victories between groups. Having a coaching staff that cares about the customer is an underestimated key ingredient to our success. Being able to stick to the board is the basic objective for anyone that pays to come into our venues and good coaching can absolutely impact if someone wants to make a repeat attempt at axe throwing. We create a significant amount of repeat customers as a result of our coaching and the relationships that we build with our throwers in a short amount of time. At one point, I ran the numbers and 17% of our customers were repeated. I would tend to think that number has increased as our business has matured. I see many venues that operate axe throwing as a spin off to their main business. This does work, but you must be invested in the experience to be successful or have a manager that knows their stuff. The biggest threat to consistency to me are the venues that have a main line of business and then they throw axe throwing in as a side show and don’t take the time to understand how to manage it. Those venues near us are dropping quickly, but the damage has been done. The customer that went there, experienced no coaching and threw at a target that should have been replaced two groups before them probably won’t try axe throwing a second time – anywhere. Memberships Final point on the experience is that we have a membership platform that has been incredibly successful for us. Our stated goal of the membership program is to become the most thrower-friendly venue in the world. Our members are people who have really fallen in love with the sport and want to be around it more often. A few have aspirations to compete at a high level in WATL championships, but the majority just enjoy blade sports and the comfortable and inviting setting we offer. We made it affordable for our members to come throw with us - $35/mo gets you unlimited access to our venues and one discipline admission per season into league. We want to see our members and are very appreciative to have 50+ active league throwers and over 100 members across Atlanta & Denver. Many venue owners scoff at the $35 price point being low, but I view it as I have grown my sales team from 1 person (me) to over 100 people because our members become our brand advocates. They tell their friends about us. They bring them with them to experience it. They host their company team building events with us. When they are practicing, they talk about the membership program with general customers beside them and even help with coaching. We have developed a mutually beneficial relationship where we provide a venue to throw axes as much as they want and they want to see us succeed. This theory is no different than a workout class where we are giving the benefit of having a place to blow off steam and spend time with friends. The membership fees are purposefully affordable and with over 100 members, monthly dues more than pay for our monthly cost of wood. Summary I’ve written something like this a few times over the years, but never brought myself to publish these thoughts out of fear that nobody would care. Now with the industry rapidly changing and many owners going through hardship, I’d love to see owners work together to summit and talk about our issues and figure out a growth plan. There are so many smart business people that own axe throwing venues and there’s still a great opportunity to build a sustainable long-term business in this field. Consider this my challenge to us to get together and talk. --- ### Mobile Axe Throwing in a Convention Center - Published: 2025-03-13 - Modified: 2025-03-13 - URL: https://american-axes.com/mobile-axe-throwing-in-a-convention-center/ - Categories: Axe Throwing By Dan Fisher American Axes was recently contracted to bring axe throwing to the Commodity Classic, held at the Colorado Convention Center in March 2025. This trade show features large farming equipment and various services for some of America’s biggest farmers. Our role was to provide an entertainment element for a 2,000-person dinner hosted by our client. With two major hubs in Atlanta and Denver, we are approaching 500 events across 20 different states. Now, for the first time in our history, we can proudly say that we have brought axe throwing indoors at a major convention center. Every new request presents a challenge, and this was one of the most complex yet. We were asked if our trailer could fit through an entryway with a clearance of 116 inches and whether we could build additional lanes to accommodate demand during a short activation period. Overcoming Space Constraints First, fitting the trailer into the tight space posed a challenge. Initial measurements suggested we were 1 inch too tall. To resolve this, we prepared to remove the wheels and place the axles and tongue onto automobile rollers, which would provide an extra 4–6 inches of clearance. However, after slightly deflating the tires, our trailer measured 115. 5 inches—just enough to squeak through. The tightest clearance we encountered was the banquet hall doorway at exactly 116 inches. Meanwhile, the freight elevator gave us a couple of extra inches to spare. In the end, everything worked out great and we just squeaked by! Building Modular Lanes Constructing the axe-throwing lanes was another adventure. When we first started American Axes, woodworking and construction weren’t part of our core skill set. Over time, however, we’ve learned the ins and outs of building lanes ourselves—something we now take pride in, as it saves both time and costs. Our workshop is located in Atlanta, so we opted to build the lanes in Georgia and transport them to Denver in a box truck. The 26-hour drive was certainly not the highlight of the experience! Some even asked why we didn’t source lumber in Colorado, but the reality is that working in our own shop with access to our tools streamlined the process significantly. Once we arrived at the Colorado Convention Center, we transported each panel to our designated space. Our team of five assembled everything in under 90 minutes, ensuring we were show-ready in short order. A Successful Event The finished setup turned out great! We introduced many first-time throwers to the sport, offering coaching from professional competitive axe throwers. Three of our team members—Clark Zimmerman, Walden Cox, and Dan Fisher—were there to guide participants. All three will also be competing in the World Axe and Knife Throwing Championship in Appleton, Wisconsin, this April. Our company has deep roots in experiential and trade show marketing, and this event was a milestone for us. We’ve now proven that we can bring axe throwing anywhere—even indoors—while continuing to grow the sport and deliver a first-class experience. A Family Effort One of the most meaningful aspects of this event was the role of family. Family values are at the heart of American Axes, and this experience was a perfect example. This project allowed a father and son to work side by side—John Fisher stepped away from the golf course to help his son, Dan Fisher, owner of American Axes. From building the lanes to driving from Atlanta to Denver and setting up at the event, John was there every step of the way, making the journey even more special. We are incredibly grateful for the opportunities we receive from our clients. Tackling challenges like this with a team of colleagues, friends, and family makes every project even more rewarding. Thanks for being part of our journey! --- ### WATL Amateur Championships - Published: 2024-09-17 - Modified: 2024-10-28 - URL: https://american-axes.com/watl-amateur-championships/ - Categories: Axe Throwing American Axes and Bad Axe Throwing are hosting the WATL Amateur Championships in Atlanta. I've always been a little quirky and misunderstood. I had a hard time relating to my peers when I was younger, in large part due to my inability to succeed at sports. I hated sports growing up because I was laughably bad at everything. I come from a very athletic family, and was required to try one sport each year. And I did try. I attempted to do soccer, dance, gymnastics, hockey, golf, volleyball, swimming, ice skating and more. I'm just not naturally good at these things. I am clumsy, uncoordinated, about as flexible as a lead pipe, and small. I was often overpowered by others simply because of my size. Eventually I gave up on sports, and found a love for performing arts instead. It took time, but I accepted the fact that I was meant to be a theater kid, not a star athlete. Fast forward a few years, and I finished college in May of 2020, the worst possible time in history. It was a struggle to find work throughout 2020 and 2021. I moved to Denver hoping to find better opportunities, but I had no idea where my career was going. One night as I was walking out of a concert, I saw a sign for axe throwing. At the time, I didn't think of it as a sport, but as a fun activity. They were closed that night, but it stayed on my mind and I knew I absolutely had to try it. About a month later, I saw that they had a job opening, and decided to apply. I was tired of getting rejected for office jobs, and felt like I had nothing to lose by applying for something fun. No axe experience necessary, but experience speaking in front of crowds was preferred. Sure enough, I got the job, and that's where my axe throwing journey began. And I was terrible at it. This was once again, a sport that I wasn't naturally good at. It took me a solid month to kinda get the hang of it. This time I was determined to do better, and over time, I slowly improved. I'm not the best, and I don't think I ever will be. But I'm proud to say that I'm good at it. I've taken all these experiences, and used it to be a better coach. I often have customers who are reluctant to try throwing an axe; their reasons vary from their size, age, disability, and some are just shy. I empathize with them, and encourage them to give it a go. With the right techniques, I usually have them sticking it within a few minutes. The look on a customer's face when they prove to themselves that they CAN do it, is priceless. As for myself, I finally found the place where I belong. This job is so much fun, and allows me to put my entertainment skills work. Everyone in this community has been nothing but kind and accepting. American Axes is by far the best place I've ever worked, I think our entire team and our members are incredible. I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to do this every day. I'm truly living my dream here! --- ### Marley Mayhem Graham Never Quits - Published: 2023-08-10 - Modified: 2023-07-27 - URL: https://american-axes.com/marley-mayhem-graham-never-quits/ - Categories: Axe Throwing By Marley Graham “Grahams never quit. ” Now, to this day, I’m still a sensitive person who can be a little intimidated by challenge, but that phrase was drilled into my mind from an age so early that I can’t remember living without its presence. Whether it was trying out for a new sports team or fighting for my life through an Analytic Geometry class for the third time, every aspect of life was peppered with the sentiment that, no matter how difficult things got, I was never allowed to give up. Axe throwing was no exception. My first experience with the sport was actually on a date that I had planned. Life felt stagnant, and I was seeing a new guy and trying new things. The guy I was seeing at the time seemed mature and self-assured, so I wanted to appear the same way. I decided on an activity I hadn’t ever done before: axe throwing. If I was good, I would be naturally impressive, but if I was terrible, I had a reason to be. Boy, was I terrible. For the first several minutes, I could only launch the Estwing in my hands directly at the ground. I thought it was fluke at first, but then I continued the same way, throw after throw. My muscle memory from the myriad of sports I played growing up came back to haunt me with a vengeance I struggled to shake, and I couldn’t stop flicking my wrist. By the time competition came around, I was the first eliminated. I excused myself to the bathroom, feeling my composure waning as my face grew hot. When I got to the bathroom, I stood in front of the running sink, trying to swallow my embarrassment. “Grahams never quit. ” My father’s voice echoed in my mind. As much as I wanted to call it quits and chalk axe-throwing up to an activity that just wasn’t for me, I couldn’t let it lie. I took a moment to remind myself to take a moment and find myself, and then I marched my sorry butt back out to the lane, picked up the dreaded axe, and just... threw it. The heavy shunk! that followed caused a feeling of glory I’ve been chasing ever since. I was so confident in my random success that I decided to try it again, just to be certain that I could. The second stick affirmed my belief that I could do this, and if I really worked at it, I could probably get pretty good. In the next moment, I did something that, to this day, I attribute to changing my life for the better: “... Are y’all hiring? ” I asked. “Wait, what? ” My axe master asked, a bit taken aback. “Are y’all hiring? ” I asked again. “Oh, uhh... ” He stammered for a moment, looking around before cracking a slight smile, “Yeah, dude... ! ! Um, the hiring manager’s at the desk, you want an application? ” By the next week, I had my first job as an axe throwing coach at Bury the Hatchet. From there, my expertise grew. I became a stellar, hands-on instructor, and my axe-throwing steadily improved. Since joining the team at American Axes, I’ve only managed to climb higher. There have been challenges, trials, and tribulations more than I can count on both hands, but I was uniquely motivated by the environment this new organization created. I’ve reached Assistant Manager, helping run the stores, events, and leagues, and as I have learned how to better communicate with my team and patrons, I’ve learned how to better communicate with myself to improve the throwing experience for everyone. In axe-throwing, I found something that I can be proud of. I’ve changed for the better as a teacher, as a thrower, and as a person, and for that, I will always be grateful. --- ### Friendly Competition - Published: 2023-08-03 - Modified: 2023-08-03 - URL: https://american-axes.com/friendly-competition/ - Categories: Axe Throwing By Grant Kramb With Summer League season kicking off this week I thought it would be a good time to talk about my journey with axe throwing and how I became a member of the American Axes family. I started here looking for a connection, not only to what I was doing but to the people I was surrounded with. I call it a family because that is the easiest way to describe it, not only with my peers but with all of the members as well, relationships have formed that I am lucky to have. Funny enough those relationships have driven me to improve my game, and although I have a long way to go it’s good to see you all doing the same. I have always been motivated, almost to a fault, by winning; simply put, I cannot stand any other outcome. It does not matter the activity whether its a simple card game or a heated tournament game during week 8. My first time throwing was a disaster, I was a baseball player that motion was all I knew, I am sure you can hear the thumps of the axe against the board at 90MPH right now. With a little help from our resident pro Colton I became consistent sticking and was finally and axe thrower. It was not until I saw a league night though that I wanted more, the competition and community, what could be better? That is when it all really started for me. I bought my first axe and I went to work, I started with an Estwing which may not be the greatest choice for a competition axe but it was a start. Something you all may or may not know about me is I am obsessive about things I have a passion for. I love baseball, something me and Dan have bonded over, and now I love axes. I spend endless hours teaching myself different throws that I saw on TV. I would watch past tournaments anywhere I could find them and try every little thing I saw the pros doing. I am still doing that and I would recommend everyone else do the same. You can always be better, try things, give them a real chance and maybe you will too. Of course, so much has changed for me and American Axes as a whole since I started my throwing journey. I am now on my millionth different throw surely to be millionth and one by next week; I am now throwing my seventh different axe with more coming. At American Axes we have transitioned to WATL which sparked something in a lot of us I am sure, new challenges and the always arm-length goals we have all set. Perfection, pro status, killshots hit, games won, whatever it is that pushes you keep using it. After all, even with all of this change we still do this for the same reasons we started in the first place; a little friendly competition. For me my goals are clearer than ever, I will earn my pro status... I will go to worlds and represent American Axes, hopefully with some of you all as well. I have a long way to go but who doesn’t love a challenge. Good luck to all of our throwers throughout the rest of Summer season, I can’t wait to get better with everyone! --- ### The Long Journey - Published: 2023-07-27 - Modified: 2023-07-27 - URL: https://american-axes.com/the-long-journey/ - Categories: Axe Throwing By Jacob Crossan Sometimes as you go through life you may feel as if you are simply meandering through it, but I was never one for running away from a challenge. There are not many who see the rocky bottom and make it out, but I did. This is where I learned to stop saying "I can't" and start saying "I can". Changing this tiny, some would say, miniscule thing, instantly turned hopeless to hopeful, unappreciative to grateful and failure to success. I now consider myself "living the dream", with a beautiful wife who loves me to death, a phenomenal job that never feels like work, and quite an amazing group of friends.   What more could I want? Well, that's the easy question. WATL champion, though I still have a long journey ahead of me I am prepared to do what it takes to get there. Every one of you has made a lasting impact on my life and I pray we all remain friends through the sands of time. In one form or another we have all let each other into one another's personal lives and it's such a beautiful thing. One of my favorite things about us all is the camaraderie between our axe throwing family. We build each other up, we lend a listening ear, and offer advice to one another. Whether it’s about axes or something personal I have seen us all lift each other up and it’s a magnificent thing to see. I am exactly where I want to be. This long Journey is such an alluring thing. --- ### The Joy of Duals - Published: 2023-06-01 - Modified: 2023-06-01 - URL: https://american-axes.com/the-joy-of-duals/ - Categories: Axe Throwing By Wes Smith We made it through the 8 weeks of the American Axes Spring 2023 WATL Season! We appreciate everyone who participated in both hatchet and duals across all three of our stores and we hope to see you all next season plus many more! The Works Axe Throwing We decided as a group that both hatchet and duals would be best 2-of-3 which led to some serious drama. Colton beat Tom for the championship in Hatchet. Ebony and Ivory (Evan & Whitney) beat Ripping 6’s (Jacob & Dan) for the Championship in Duals. Evan (57) and Dan (55) set their season high scores during tournament play. Wes announced that he will be taking the summer league off to let the ol’ axe throwing arm recover, boosted by a heavy dose of Ibuprofen, he showed no signs of fatigue tonight finishing 3rd in the tournament. At the conclusion of games, a good portion of the us stayed to hang out and play drinking games on the patio (photo attached). This has become a The Works league tradition that we are glad to have kept going.     Marietta Axe Throwing Colton pulls off the double and took home the hatchet championship in consecutive days. For style points, he closed it out with a perfect game in the finals. Congratulations to Noah for making it all the way to the A bracket finals and finishing 3rd overall in the tournament. Team Who Knows (Brandon & James) took home the crown in duals over Lucipurr (Jacob & Grant)     Edgewater Axe Throwing Congrats to Walden for taking the title of League Champion! We had a lot of close games, but it was a great time for everyone. Instead of using regular axes for the entire time, we made our games super interesting by allowing players to roll the dice to choose their weapon. We had axes, knives, cleavers, axe heads, and stars as options. We switched weapons between games, and things got pretty wild! It made the games fun and challenging. We drew the attention of a lot of people in the marketplace. Everyone was curious about our weapons and members. We love seeing people get excited about the sport, and hope that our having fun leads to more customers coming in.     The Joy of Duals! We just wrapped up our second season with the World Axe Throwing League and our second season of duals! If anyone had told me 2 years ago when I started that not only would I start throwing at the same target, at the same time with our newest employee Colton, forming Team 20%, I would have laughed. Now not only are we throwing together, but we also aren't half bad at it either. Everyone knows that Colton is the pro thrower in our leagues and that I am most certainly not a pro. The fun thing about duals is any two people can team up together and have a fighting shot at winning any game. In my experience, throwing next to Colton has improved my game and motivates me to rise to his level when we throw together.   Duals isn't as simple as throwing solo though, it requires timing. There is a small window to throw the axes in unison at such a small target. If you're off even just a little bit, it can cause your axes to hit the back of the other axes, costing you points. Unfortunately, that will happen from time to time, axes will clash, fall, get dented, scratched, and destroyed. It's the risk you run when throwing duals, many people have a beater axe they throw so it's not a big lose if it gets destroyed. Team 20% went the opposite route and had custom matching handles made by one of our members, Tom Jones with Axelanta. We wanted to throw a quality axe with a quality handle so we could do as well as possible! I think the results speak for themselves.   I highly recommend everyone tries duals for at least one season, it is so much fun having someone standing there with you to share in the victories and loses. Brad Combs, our Denver manager was out in Atlanta this week and was able to score games at both league nights, which was awesome to have him! Edgewater Congrats to Walden for having the highest points this season, finishing with a total of 1565 points. It was his best season so far, and will certainly put him somewhere in the top 100! Chris Van Gurp caught up on all his make-up games. David Gallivan was sick unfortunately, and Ian Baker wasn't able to make it. All games need to be made up this week in order to finish the season. Jim Karlin brought in his daughter to watch our league, and she has decided to join us next season.   Marietta Colton finished with the high score in hatchet Congrats to Team Who Knows for taking the lead in Duals Lucipurr and Tweedles combined to throw the lowest possible score in a duals game 0-0   The Works Team 20% is dominating all competition with a 97-point lead after seven weeks Ripping 6's slipped into second with a small 14-point lead over Ebony and Ivory Colton Askew with a phenomenal season 78% on kill shots hitting 38/49 and throwing 1604 after 28 weeks Very proud to say everyone has thrown so much better than they did last season! Way to go family! Scoreboard See the Full Score Sheet The Community Spirit of Axe Throwing By Brad Combs When it comes to the American Axe Leagues, it's not just about hitting a target with a sharp object. It's also about the people you meet and the friendships you make along the way. Whether you're a seasoned axe thrower or a beginner like me, the community we foster around this activity is welcoming and supportive. Everyone is driven to improve their skills and to have a good time, and there's a great sense of camaraderie among our league members, as they cheer each other on and offer tips and tricks for throwing better. One of the most special aspects of the axe throwing community to me is the feeling of family that it creates within all our locations. Axe throwing may seem like an individual sport, but it’s far from that. When you walk into a League with American Axes, you’ll be greeted by a group of people who are just as excited as you are to throw some axes together. In fact, it’s not uncommon to see people giving pointers or cheering each other on as they play their matches. As you spend more time within any of our Leagues at all our locations, you’ll find that it’s easy to form close relationships with other people who share a love for the sport. To me the American Axes league aspect of axe throwing adds a whole new level of community spirit and family feeling to the sport. But the benefits of joining a league with American Axes, goes far beyond just improving your axe throwing ability. Being part of our league’s also gives you a sense of belonging and camaraderie. You become part of our team, and the people you meet through our league’s become your axe throwing family. Overall, in a world where people are often too busy or too focused on their own lives, our throwing community is a refreshing change. It’s a place where people come together to bond over our shared interests, and to support each other in achieving goals inside and outside of our leagues. It truly feels like family here, and that’s what makes axe throwing in our leagues such a special experience to me. --- ### League Recap (Week 6) – Throw Better - Published: 2023-05-25 - Modified: 2023-05-25 - URL: https://american-axes.com/league-recap-week-6-throw-better/ - Categories: Axe Throwing Hello Throwers, We had some great highlights this week, and I hope everyone is super excited as we come into the last two weeks of league. I wanted to write the email this week and follow up on Dan’s email with my own thoughts and insights. The Works Ebony and Ivory, Rippin' 6's, and 20% all scored 12’s on single throws during Duals. We witnessed the second 50 of the season for Marley! Lots and lots of very close calls and 2nd opinions called. But I think we did a good job of consistently and accurately judging. The photo below was a funny moment during Duals where everyone came to take a look at a 4/5. Coincidentally, that game ended as a 1-point victory. Make-Up Throws: Charles Jolman, Chris Ell, Pierre McNeil, Spare Change, World’s Best Grandads   Edgewater Congrats to Kitty who set a personal record this season with a 53. Chris Marquez had to leave early, so we started league early and all pitched in as a team to get his games done in time. We missed our shovel throwing friends David and Andrea, who are on vacation in Mexico. They will need to make up their games this week. We are also missing games from Chris Van Gurp and Matt Barela. Make-Up Throws: Eric Duvall, Sean Rayborn, Aaron Rayborn, Smarty Ray, Who Knows, Tweedles   Marietta Amazingly so, Kai went to "who sucks less" in 3 matches tonight. Richard broke into the 60 club, oh so close. Congrats to Jay for joining the 50 club. James Waldrop announced the winner of the W. L. Weller Bourbon raffle and that winner was Brady Trulove – super duper jealous. Team Smarty Ray is averaging a league high 47. 65 for Duals. Impressive. Also this photo of them throwing belongs in the Louvre – make sure to look closely at Richard and Ray. Make-Up Throws: Andrea Hildebrandt, David Gallivan, Chris Van Gurp, Matt Barela   Scoreboard Note this week that a few people pre-threw their games for next week, so the totals and averages might look a little funny. Check out the excel chart for more details. See the Full Score Sheet   Throw Better I feel like I have some insights to give on the topic of “Throwing Better. ” I have spent a lot of time practicing, trying new things, and working on consistency. I still have a long way to go, but I have also found that I enjoy talking to others and giving feedback to them that I see. I’m going to break down some of the things that I do and why I think they work, and hopefully there’s a nugget of wisdom that someone can take from it. Anchors Build Consistency I feel like it’s common knowledge that the more you can do the same every throw then the more consistent you are. If you talk to anyone who has thrown axes for a good amount of time, they have found anchors, or places on their body that the axe, or their arm go to every throw. If you look at me, I use my collarbone and ear as anchor points, Where James Waldrop, and Brandon use their head and ears. If you ask anyone, they will probably tell you where their anchors are, and big part of developing a throw that works for you is identifying the natural anchor points you tend to use.  If you can start to identify these places so that every time you set up or start your throw you FEEL the axe in the same exact place as before then that’s how you start to build a throw that is consistent. Find the Point of Balance Every object ever has a point of balance, on an axe the point of balance is usually close to underneath the head if not right through the head of the axe. To find your axe’s point of balance, try to balance your axe on your finger until you can hold it up with just one finger. When I throw, I focus on getting this balance point to where I want the axe to go on the board and if I am successful, the blade should fall into place right where I want it. If you focus on the point of balance, then throwing at little bitty dots becomes so much easier. I’m throwing one little metaphorical spot at a second physical dot and letting the actual blade of the axe cover my mistake if I miss. This is a conceptual thought, but when I heard Ryan Smit tell me this years ago a lot of things clicked for me. Practice With Purpose A big thing I have noticed in myself and something that I must consciously be aware of and consider when I practice, and something that I think is easily overlooked is practicing with purpose. What I mean by that is if you come in to throw, play games with friends, and even on League nights when you throw and are not hitting what you want, or you are and then suddenly you aren’t. Why? What did you change from this throw to that throw, and how do you make every throw the one that you want? Did I use a different anchor? Did I use a slightly different grip? Am I adding unnecessary movement somewhere that is affecting the movement of my throw? If this is unnecessary movement, how do I get rid of it? The biggest thing is when you throw you should be looking for the answers to these types of questions. Call Your Killshots This is in direct contradiction to what Dan said last week and is specifically for anyone who wants to hit more kills and who has goals of going Pro. CALL YOUR KILLS, all of them. If you are at a point where it’s easy to hit your kills in practice, then start going up. In practice there’s no pressure, you’re not playing anyone, you’re avg won’t go down if you miss, and all the other reasons not to go up during a game. If you start going up now under the pressure and get used to it, Killshots become so much easier. You get used to blocking out your thoughts, and just throwing. Practice it. You won’t be able to walk into a season and hit 50% or more killshots if you don’t start practicing going up in a game setting. Mind Over Average My last thought is that axe throwing is mainly a mind game, and I’ve had lots of very good throwers tell me to get out of my head. Thank you, James Waldrop. Any throwers you ever talk to will tell you that the mental game is the most important. If you can get out of your own head and just throw, your game will improve so much! When you drop, mentally shake it off. The next throw is still throw one. What you threw before, and what you’re about to throw don’t add up to “I have to hit a 6 to keep and avg of 50. ” It’s always throw one. This is the hardest thing to do and something I think everyone struggles with but is easily one of the most important aspects of throwing. Private Coaching If you have read this far. This is something I am very passionate about and would love to talk with anyone who wants to explore these topics more or who just wants general feedback on their throws. I would love to work with you and will be opening some time to do some 1-on-1 coaching with anyone who would like help growing their game and now will offer private coaching sessions. We will go more in depth on theories behind throwing, the topics above, and being another eye and mind to find a throw that works for you. If anyone is interested in this, please reach out to me. Throw you well and prosper! --- ### League Recap (Week 5) – Getting Vulnerable - Published: 2023-05-25 - Modified: 2023-05-25 - URL: https://american-axes.com/league-recap-week-5-getting-vulnerable/ - Categories: Axe Throwing Axe Throwing Enthusiasts, Another fun week in the books and some pretty exciting and impressive things to discuss: Edgewater Black Metal Axe AKA Walden Cox achieved his first 64 yesterday while throwing his makeup games with Brad. This marks the second thrower in any of our leagues to hit this milestone and we’re thrilled to hand out another one of those patches! Ian joined the 50 club, while Brad (57), Kim (49) and Jim (47) all set personal records this week. There was an audience! Kitty’s mom played the role of cheerleader for this Wednesday’s league – please feel free to bring friends at any of our leagues to watch. Makeup Throws: Alexander Boehm and Chris Van Gurp (4 games behind), Matt Barela (12 games behind) Marietta Noah impressively joined the elusive 60-club, knocking on the door of that 64. Jordan had her first 50, with that Marietta now has 24/33 throwers that have made it to 50 this season with several just a couple points away. In Duals, Team Tweedles caught all the way back up with a 7-0 start before Lucipurr took them down in their final match of the night. Oh so close to a perfect night. Makeup Throws: Colton Askew, Marty Lippert, Taylor Wheaton (4 games behind), Ninja/Jesse (7 games behind), Aaron Rayborn (12 games behind) The Works Team Lockjaw was Rippin’ 6’s all night long in the absence of Rippin’ 6’s. We’re checking with WATL to try to figure out some of the IT challenges that this league experienced. For whatever reason, Tom and Charles are both showing 21 games played and that did not happen. This app is a joy. Lighter attendance week, will be back to full strength next week from our side. Makeup Throws: Colton Askew & Evan Suttle (4 games behind) Makeup Throws We made a change at Marietta this past week and are considering it for other leagues as well. Some throwers in Marietta (33 throwers in league) came to me last week and mentioned that make-up throws being added to the normal week was causing league to last longer – makes sense, more games = more time. So what we did was instituted a plan that at 6pm the day of league, throwers that need to make up games can come in and compete against other throwers. If that is not an option, they can throw non-competitive (NC) matches. Each thrower is allowed up to 8 NC matches per league season to receive WATL circuit points. Now during each week, we will not have any thrower play more than 4 matches to keep the night moving. We will try to be as flexible as possible and for instance, we did make-up throws in the VIP room while other matches were happening. I would be curious to hear feedback from other league throwers if you like this idea. Axe Throwing Theory It may be a minute before I write another one of these, but I wanted to get a little vulnerable and talk about my own journey of growing my game and I have had a couple of eye opening experiences since I shifted to WATL that I feel like may be relatable to some. Cut the Comparison – I suffer from being overly competitive. I purposefully chose the word suffer because I believe that it does not make me a better thrower – being overly competitive makes me worse. In the past (and present), I have paid attention to what was going on beside me too closely. If a competing thrower would get excessively loud or step in the lane before me (now scored a foot fault), it would completely throw me off and sometimes unrecoverably so. I appreciate Wes helping me come to a better appreciation of this by pointing it out. While I’d love to say that I have it under control, I don’t and probably won’t for a while. My goal is to become singularly focused on my score and ignoring what’s going on beside me and thank you to Wes for being willing to give me this pointer. I believe that for me to take the next step, I am going to need to work on my own mental strength and that is my primary focus. Cut out the noise and play my own game. Rippin’ 6’s – This one is related to throwing and my new favorite league phrase. Now that I am achieving an average of 49, I’m feeling pretty good about myself – my game took a step in the right direction recently for the first time in at least a year. I have taken in a lot of different opinions that I have listened to about what to do next to grow my score and I encourage others who have an opinion to write about it and be featured in future newsletters. What I have decided on (at least this week) is to lean in on the 6. Looking at the data last week, I was surprised to see that I have hit the 3rd most bullseyes at The Works league (72), yet also a high amount of 4’s (55). I see an opportunity to add more points to my score by turning 4’s into 5’s and then eventually 5’s into 6’s. I plan to continue to hold the killshot’s back for a while until I can see progress with the 6. I’m not saying that I am not planning to practice killshots, turns out Stairway to Eleven is my new favorite game to play and use as a way to practice. Food for thought and I’d love to hear from you on what you’re thinking about to take your game to the next level. Go Braves. Each team must consist of one male thrower and one female thrower. “We are very excited to host a co-ed Duals tournament,” said owner, Dan Fisher, “Having just recently started duals, it has quickly become one of our favorite axe throwing disciplines because of the unique nature of having a teammate. One thing that we would love to grow in the future is the number of female throwers that compete in our league, and this duals tournament is meant to be a big statement that axe throwing is for everyone. We aim to have a big turnout! ” For those curious, Duals is a little different from standard hatchet throwing, with the main differences being: Teams throw at the same target simultaneously, and players must throw in unison from similar distances. If one teammates axe reaches the board before their partner releases their axe, the throw is considered illegal and no points are awarded. Individual throwers may call kill shots at any time and do not have to call kill shot on the same throw as their partner. Want details? We have considered WATL for several years, but recently our leagues have gotten significantly more competitive to the point now where there are several throwers that are now aspiring to grow their game and play towards larger tournament invitations. We have wanted this from the start, but between COVID and several other competitive leagues in the Atlanta area, it took us a while to get to this point. Colton Askew started at American Axes in May 2021. It was his goal when he started to work not only to be a good coach, but a superb thrower as well so he signed up for our league and got to throwing as much as possible. Colton’s pursuit of growing his game has been an inspirational moment for American Axes and we wanted to share his story in his words: My path in throwing axes was heavily influenced by experienced throwers: Justin Overholser, a former coach at American Axes, saw me practicing during a shift of ours one day and took me aside to teach me a more accurate way to throw. He taught me how to hold the axe like a dart, and step into my throw. This sent the axe straight to where I wanted to put it. I continued practice this throw and narrowed in my throw to be able to mostly hit bullseyes, or very close to bullseyes. This was a big first step in my journey as a thrower. Jon Allen, a professional WATL thrower, came into the store to practice. I played some games with him and got his insight on what I could improve upon. I made some major changes to the way I threw and continued to practice. Jon had me take the step out of my throw, telling me. The more movement you have the more variables you add in. If your goal is to hit the bullseye consistently then stand still no bounce into, or step. Movement should be isolated, and your variables brought lower to build consistency and lower your margin of error. I was practicing daily at this point even coming in on my days off to throw.  I threw my first perfect game shortly after, 9 bullseyes and one killshot. Ryan Smit, WATL Champion. I was eventually sent a video breaking down how Ryan Smit, the winner of World Axe Throwing League Worlds Championship Tournament in 2020, throws, and I began to emulate the throw that he had created. I was able to improve my game significantly after that to the point that I could throw a perfect game consistently on our targets. I eventually got to meet Ryan as he came into our Atlanta location one night while I happened to be working. We played some games, and he critiqued my throw, and showed me slight improvements I could make. Afterwards we went to get drinks together and we talked about some of the theories behind how to make a perfect throw, and the repetition that must be put in to do so. I switched my original goal of being the best at our location and set my sights on being a ranked WATL thrower.   The chance encounter with Ryan Smit pushed me to practice more than ever, and to really put time and thought into how I was throwing and ways to adjust and improve what I was already doing. Entering my 2nd year on-staff, I was considered the best thrower we have on staff, but I had set my sights on other goals. Shortly after meeting Ryan, I then met Ashley Change, aka Attagirl Axes if you follow her socials, who pushed me to go with her to a WATL marathon league at Big’s Axe Throwing in Dalton GA. We went and I played games against guys who had been to the World’s Tournament, and I was able to hold my own. I won the marathon league and left feeling hungry for more. I did another marathon league in Dalton, and while I did not walk away the winner, I did gain an understanding of what it took to be considered a professional thrower and how steep the competition is. Colton’s pursuit of professional axe throwing led American Axes to start painting our targets with the WATL stencil so that Colton had a place to practice. We decided to build a membership program with the thrower in mind – for a monthly fee of $35, you receive admission into league and the ability to throw as often as you want. We’ve seen our throwers improve so much because of this program and now it’s time to affiliate with WATL. As 2022 comes to a close, our Winter League is bigger than it has ever been with over 20 throwers and many of whom share our vision for bigger things and passion for throwing. We are excited for where the journey as a thrower will take Colton and others as we eye bigger tournaments and engaging more with the community. --- ### Wes Smith, American Axes Atlanta Senior Manager - Published: 2022-11-28 - Modified: 2022-11-21 - URL: https://american-axes.com/wes-smith-american-axes-atlanta-senior-manager/ - Categories: Axe Throwing It has been four years since I threw my first axe, I was brought to a local axe throwing venue on a date night planned by my girlfriend at the time. I picked up the skill quickly and with little coaching from the “axepert” on my first outing. While that venue didn’t put in the effort to make sure a customer learned how to throw, they did give me the space I needed to figure it out on my own. Two years after that I first started coming to American Axes where I really developed my love for axe throwing. The coaches that worked here at the time, made sure that I knew how to throw and when I was doing well, started showing me how to throw trick shots that I had no idea about. I quickly started to develop a friendship with the employees at American Axes and eventually with the owner, Dan Fisher. It was then that I started to think I would like to run my own Axe Throwing venue but quickly realized that I would rather be a part of American Axes. In 2021, American Axes started to grow and needed a manager to help run the stores, I quickly threw my hat in the ring! It wasn’t an easy decision for me to walk away from 11 years at the United States Postal Service, to “throw” axes for a living but sometimes you have to risk it for the biscuit. There was a definite learning curve for some of the aspects of my job, I didn’t have much experience with computer work, sales, marketing, networking or managing employees. I picked up some of those aspects of my job a lot faster than others but I would like to think I’m still growing in every aspect two years later. --- ### Meet Brad Combs, American Axes Edgewater Manager - Published: 2022-11-21 - Modified: 2022-11-21 - URL: https://american-axes.com/meet-brad-combs-american-axes-edgewater-manager/ By Brad Combs I recently joined the Axe Throwing family at American Axes in October of 2022. My first day on the job, they flew me to Atlanta where I was able to see the magic of axe throwing first-hand at both of their Atlanta locations and mobile trailers. I was given an axe and now it’s hard to put it down! I’m born and raised in Denver CO, and currently live a short drive from the new American Axes location inside Edgewater Public Market. I have been all over the state and have yet to find such an amazing group of people as I have found in the axe throwing community. Before joining American Axes, I worked as a Convenience Store Manager for the last 4 years for a line called Rocket. It was a very stressful job with very few rewards, draining on the soul. Before the convenience field, I worked for Interstate All Battery, in all sides of the batteries that power our world. I made Custom batteries as well as work closely with companies and their business needs, as well as do cell phone repair. I also have experience in Security working for both Dispensaries as well as a Local College called Loreto Heights. My favorite in the security field was working at the college, as it was an International School for ESL students. The buildings themselves are over 130 years old, and the students were always fun to meet and learn their past and what brought them to Colorado. Finally, I was a Radio Shack Store Manager, where I learned the importance of fixing anything and everything, it was a sad day when they shut their stores. It is nearly impossible to find just the right relay or capacitor with out ordering a 1000x of them online. I’m excited for this new opportunity and the places we can go at American Axes including working to build out a mobile axe throwing business in the warm weather months. Come by our shop and let’s throw some axes! --- ### New Store Opening in Edgewater Public Market - Published: 2022-11-15 - Modified: 2022-11-21 - URL: https://american-axes.com/new-store-opening-in-edgewater-public-market/ - Categories: Axe Throwing American Axes opened in January 2020 and the business plan was always to open many axe throwing venues across the country offering a best-in-class experience. As fate would have it, we were closed for COVID-19 after only 9 weeks of action. As the pandemic did for so many, it slowed our growth plan significantly. Being an entertainment company, we feel fortunate to have survived and grown during the pandemic by adding mobile axe throwing in 2020 and then a second store in Atlanta at The Works ATL in 2021. While our measured approach to growth was the right one, we are very excited to be opening store #3 at Edgewater Public Market in Edgewater, Colorado. When telling friends about our intention to open a store in Colorado, the first question is almost always, “why Denver? ” – hinting at the long distance between stores. The answer to that question is the opportunity. We are thrilled to be moving into the Edgewater Public Market because it’s an incredible place where it’s impossible not to feel a sense of community and friendship between the tenants. Our location shares a wall with Barquentine Brewing and about 150 feet away from a wonderful assortment of around 15 food vendors. In the middle of all of that are a variety of amazing niche shops – yarn, essential oils, tattoo parlor, local flavor t-shirts and barber shop to name a few. The opportunity to be affiliated with all of these other great businesses is absolutely the reason we chose Colorado. Axe Throwing goes best when it is paired with craft beer and local businesses and we are very excited to bring a new activity to the market. As our third location opens in November 2022, it’s an unbelievably exciting time for us as a company as we intend to prove our newest vision of what Axe Throwing is and the amenities that our customers have access to. Any suggestions as to where we should go next – let us know! --- ### Beginners Guide to Axe Selection - Published: 2021-07-07 - Modified: 2022-11-21 - URL: https://american-axes.com/beginners-guide-to-axe-selection/ - Categories: Axe Throwing Co-authored by David Whittington In axe throwing, the first decision that you have is to choose an axe that is right for you. Most people have no idea what axe they should choose, which is totally fair because how would any new thrower know which axe to throw? For us, we had to try a variety of axes to understand which works best for us. We’ve been in the sport for a few years, and would like to share our knowledge with people who would like to pick up axe throwing. When considering what axe to choose for yourself, there are three main factors to look at: weight, blade length, and sharpness.   We’ll start off by looking at the weight of the axe.   Now while we do call it axe throwing, what we are actually throwing is hatchets.   Hatchets are generally smaller than axes by about 7-10 inches depending on the manufacturer and are much more conducive to throwing than full sized axes.   Most hatchets start off with a weight of about 1. 25 lbs. Personally, we find that a heavier hatchet is best for beginners and even for professionals. The weight of the hatchet affects how much force you use when throwing to make it stick in the target.   Keep in mind when we say heavier, we mean by only about half a pound to a full pound.   If you choose one that is too heavy, you will drain yourself of energy. Axe throwing is not like bowling or golf: you get a lot more repetitions throwing than in the previously mentioned sports. If you are new to the sport, start off looking for an axe that weighs in at about 1. 25 lbs to about 2. 25 lbs. Now that weight is out of the way, we can look at length. The length of the axe will vary depending on the manufacturer, but its best to start off with a longer handle so you can cut it down to adjust. A 17-inch handle is a good length to start off with simply because there is a lot of wiggle room to cut it down until it suits your throw style. The reason length is so important in throwing is because the longer the handle is the further away you have to be for it to complete one rotation. One rotation is all that is needed: if you are too close to the target it will usually just hit on the handle and fall to the ground, too far from the target and it will over rotate and hit the top of the axe head. Length is one of the things that you as the thrower are going to have to test out and discover what best fits you.   Our suggestion would be to start around a 17-inch handle so you can adjust it. Lastly, we have the sharpness of the blade.   Most people think that sharpness would be number one, but you actually don’t need an incredibly sharp blade. It helps to have a sharp blade, of course, but it isn't necessary. When you buy an axe, most axes are made for splitting wood and camping. The blade will usually be thicker and on the dull side so you will want to profile the blade so that the first inch or so is just a couple of millimeters thick. The reason sharpness matters is because it also affects how hard you have to throw. A sharp blade is great if you plan on throwing for an extended period of time because you're not exerting a massive amount of energy while throwing. The less sharp a blade is, the harder you will have to throw it. A thin blade generally means you can aim it better since the amount of force needed is less.  The axe that we compete with is 2. 18 lbs, length of the handle is 15 inches with an incredibly sharp blade. We hope this information helps in providing an idea on what to go with for your axe throwing needs and questions. Thank you so much for reading, stay healthy, and have a great day! --- ### PRESS RELEASE: AXE THROWING COMING TO THE WORKS - Published: 2021-04-06 - Modified: 2022-11-21 - URL: https://american-axes.com/press-release-axe-throwing-coming-to-the-works/ - Categories: Axe Throwing ATLANTA, GA. The overwhelming majority of our customers use the axes that we provide which are 12-inch wooden handled hatchets. We chose these types of axes because they are safer to throw for beginners. With most of the weight situated at the top, it is unlikely the axe will bounce back if you happen to throw it wrong. You likely have seen the infamous axe throwing video and while you have to do everything wrong for that to happen, American Axes is not in the business of providing DIY haircuts. After testing many different axes, we chose to use the wooden handled axes because they outperformed metal and fiberglass handles for safety. A second reason why we chose wooden handles is because they are about a pound lighter compared to metal handles. One of the most common questions us coaches get from customers is “how heavy is the axe? ” Most of our customers are surprised at how light it is and are pleased to learn that our axes are not very heavy. A lighter axe is absolutely easier to learn with and can quickly make our throwers feel confident. Of course, there are some who prefer bigger and heavier axes. We have Estwing camping hatchets available for people upon request and always available in our VIP Room. The Estwing is very popular in axe throwing circles but has fallen out of favor because it is almost always the axe used in the bounce back videos. Ultimately, if you don’t throw it too hard, you should be just fine with an Estwing. I wanted to end this blog post by simply saying feel free to bring your own axe as well. Finally, we encourage our customers to bring in their own axes, so long as they follow the following guidelines: • No longer than 17-inches • Blade is 4-inches or less • Weight is no more than 5 pounds Thank you for your time in reading this post and we hope everyone stays happy and healthy during this pandemic. Thomas asked me, “What’s your pivot? ” – a question that I did not really have a great answer to at that time. I was just trying to survive. Our business was open for less than 3 months before having to temporarily shut our doors for the pandemic – a business that is 100% dependent on people coming to be entertained by us. I figured that if we kept providing a socially distanced, safe and clean environment, we would be able to survive and that there were enough people that would be wanting safe activities. To a degree, I was right, but that line kept pulling at me. Was there something that I could do to adjust to the change in consumer behavior? A few weeks later after a few pints of a Schoolhouse Black IPA – it came to me – American Axes needs to build an axe throwing trailer! For those not comfortable with going to visit us in our store, we could come to you and be outdoors with even more distance than in our store. What a great opportunity that a few others had already been doing as a primary business. Feverishly, I wrote a business plan on how we could do this and sent out an e-mail to our leadership team well after midnight. After some reviews and revisions in the plan, we decided to go for it. This was mostly a DIY project that I worked on for a couple of months with the help of a local welder. I learned a whole lot in this process, but the biggest learning point was to avoid a fixer upper. We bought a used trailer because of low cost and as I removed the original deck boards, it revealed a two foot section of the trailer frame had been cut out at some point in the past and the deck boards were the only reason keeping the trailer together. The solution was pay $400 to get the welder to attach a new section of frame. Photo: (Left) – this was the condition of the trailer when it first arrived (Right) – after removing many of the deck boards, you can see the back left sagging where the frame had been cut. Once we recovered from my error in judgment and the trailer became road worthy, we designed it to be compact and functional. Some of our design features:  From the ground, the entire cage is 9 feet 8 inches tall – significantly shorter than our competitors because our throwers are on the ground level making ours more nimble to move indoors when requested. It has steel doors that come of the end of the cage to create a totally enclosed experience for 16 feet. We installed a thick rubber floor which helps stop axes from bouncing around or sliding. There are two targets for people to compete against each other. Built a stair using the reclaimed deck boards from the original trailer. Designed barricade to create a branded throwing area that our staff can control who enters. Roughly three months from the conversation with Thomas, things came full circle. We set-up our trailer for the first time at Schoolhouse Brewing right in front of that same patio where the conversation originated. The purpose of this story is to reiterate the importance to adapt. I’m not speaking just about businesses, but also down to people working on their careers. 2020 has created so many challenges for Americans that it also is an excellent opportunity to try something new or work on something that you have been wanting to try. This pivot for American Axes has been a helpful new sales item that allows us to come to visit customers and also build our brand as events begin to return to Atlanta. So, what’s your pivot?   --- ### VIP Room and Additional Lane Open for Re-Opening Phase 2 - Published: 2020-06-08 - Modified: 2022-11-21 - URL: https://american-axes.com/vip-room-and-additional-lane-open-for-re-opening-phase-2/ - Categories: Axe Throwing As the calendar turned to June and restrictions began to further relax in Georgia, American Axes remains committed to the safety of our customers and staff. I am writing this to inform you about what to expect when arriving for your axe throwing session. When you arrive at our facility, you will be greeted by one of the coaches on duty that day. We will ask for your booking information and we will then follow that up with asking if you have filled out the waiver form, we send it to you when make a booking with us. We recommend filling the waiver out online after completing the booking with us as it speeds up the check in process. After you and your group fill out waivers if you have not done so already, you will then be escorted to your lane and assigned a coach. We start promptly at the top of the hour and end exactly at your assigned times, that is why we emphasize arriving a few minutes early so as to not lose time. Once the time has arrived, we go through rules and teach how to throw. Keep in mind during this process you are only going to be taught the basics of axe throwing. Once this process is complete, you will then be allowed to throw with you assigned coach who will then help get you to stick the board consistently. Once you get comfortable with throwing, we have games for your group and our coaches will help teach you the rules and how to score. We want to give you the best experience possible, so we remain close, but will give you your space. This is to ensure that you are having a great time, but to also make sure you are throwing safely. Once your time is up, we are happy to take a group photo in the lane. After that, you gather your belongings and are free to stay and watch others throw or hang out on our patio area. While tipping is greatly appreciated, it is not required for our coaches. Hope to see your wonderful faces soon! --- ### Coronavirus plan at American Axes - Published: 2020-04-28 - Modified: 2022-11-21 - URL: https://american-axes.com/coronavirus-plan-at-american-axes/ - Categories: Axe Throwing As a business that was just into our third month of operating, Coronavirus was a rude awakening to how quickly things can change in business and in life. We are thrilled to be re-opening, but wanted to communicate to our customers that American Axes has made the necessary adjustments for social distancing and cleaning protocols. During the current phase one of re-opening, we have immediately implemented the following safety measures: All axe handles, surfaces and chairs are to be disinfected with hospital grade disinfectant before being used again. We will have constant airflow by having our front and roll up door always open All American Axes employees are always to wear a face mask  There will be three (3) throwing areas with a minimum of six (6) feet to separate active throwing areas Floors will be taped to indicate six (6) feet of distance A single group size is not to exceed six (6) people Waivers must be filled out online before arrival or on personal devices Check-in and waiting area will be set-up outside the entrance I got used to hearing from our customers how wonderful axe throwing is for stress relief. You don’t need to be stressed about our commitment to safety and you can focus on letting out some of your stress. During this first phase, I believe that the experience is going to allow you to get to know our coaches even better and receive more 1-on-1 coaching. Some memorable nights when we just had opened were when I was coaching a couple of groups by myself. I found that I made friends and we invented new games.  Now more than ever, we are looking forward to hosting your party! In the video, a young woman throws the axe so hard that the handle hits the ground so hard it then hits against the target and flies back at her. Luckily, she is able to dodge it and avoids getting a nice haircut. So, what went wrong? Well, what didn’t? I’m going to do my best to explain it and put people who are hesitant about axe throwing at ease. First off, notice there is no axe throwing coach anywhere to be seen in this video. That is a big no-no in the axe throwing business especially with people who have never thrown an axe before. At American Axes, we never walk away from someone who is new and hasn’t landed on the board yet. Our job as a coach is to make sure you are comfortable with throwing and that you are throwing properly to avoid incidents like this. The lack of a coach is the number one reason that happened. Secondly, when she threw the axe, she threw it WAY TOO HARD. It doesn’t take a lot of power to throw an axe at a board and have it stick. Our coaches stress that when throwing you want to throw through the board not at it just don’t throw it so hard you blow your back out. In other words, throw it like you mean it just don’t give it everything you have. The reason why we stress not to give it everything you have is because usually when you do that you will spike the axe in front of you, or what you saw in the video where the handle hits so hard it comes back. When you try axe throwing, please don’t try to throw at 100% power – you’re not going to be nearly as successful as a finesse thrower. Another issue is that starting off with such a big axe isn’t a good idea. I’ve been an axe long enough to know that starting off with an Estwing is not the best axe for a beginner. Estwing’s, which is what she threw in the video, are both longer and heavier than the types of axes that we primarily use at American Axes. We recommend using a wooden handled axe for beginners. Wooden handled axes in my opinion are preferred for beginners because they don’t have as much bounce to them compared to a metal handle. It’s easier because they aren’t so heavy, you can let go of them properly because you aren’t having to use as much strength to throw the axe. When you use a lot of power to throw an axe you will tend to throw it low (as she did). Couple the axe choice, another important technique to remember is that you want to release the axe at eye-level. In the video, she let it go way too late when her arms were pointing towards the ground. Something that is very easy to correct! When you are ready to throw axes, make sure a coach is present if you’ve never done this before. It is our job as coaches to coach and make sure you’re comfortable and throwing properly. Remember that axe throwing is a finesse sport, don’t throw it hard it doesn’t take much power to stick it in the target. Finally, remember to release the axe at eye level, which is basically straight ahead of you. I mean it when I say that axe throwing is very safe. There have been no reported major injuries from axe throwing and that is saying something with how many ranges have popped up across the country. Come try throwing axes, it is an excellent stress reliever and once you get the hang of how to throw, you’re going to love it! Thanks for reading and have a great day! --- ### Turning Unemployment into Business - Published: 2020-01-15 - Modified: 2022-11-21 - URL: https://american-axes.com/turning-unemployment-into-business/ - Categories: Axe Throwing It was the Friday before my hometown of Atlanta hosted the Super Bowl. I was in my living room working away on a new sampling project when I received the call letting me know that I was being let go. Just like that, my life changed after five plus years working with this company. It was a small to mid-size marketing agency that was bought and sold several times during my tenure and eventually became part of a major corporation. They decided to reduce their workforce by 800 people in advance of an IPO. A term that came up frequently during this time was “it’s just business” and the truth is, it was. At the time, it did not feel like a favor, but now it may have been one of the best things that could have happened to my career. A few weeks passed and my father-in-law told me to give axe throwing a shot after he did it with his company. I found it to be a fun activity and really something that I could see people enjoying. I’ve played golf most of my life and that’s a sport where it takes years to be just OK. Axe Throwing is an activity that after an hour, most people feel what it’s like to hit the target and hopefully many times. The gratification was similar to hitting a drive 250 yards dead center, but the time required was less than an hour. After several months of writing and refining a business plan, we decided to go for it. It truly became a family business with every member of the family deciding to invest at some level. After months of determining what the right property was for us followed by building out the space, we finished what was nearly a year-long journey to a finished product. Along the way, I gained new skills and knowledge about business that I would have never had exposure to. Negotiating a lease or managing a commercial buildout are complex tasks. Already, the professional development that I have enjoyed because of this business has been worth the risk. As we look to start the next decade, it is time for the American Axes brand to grow and become part of the Marietta, Georgia business community. I am excited to become an entrepreneur for the first time in my life because of the support of my family and friends. I am looking forward to breaking some boards together! ---
